Reaction of l-(4'-nitrobenzyl)-4-methylpyridinium chloride ([NO2BzMePy]Cl and CuCl2 with concentrated hydrochloric acid results in the forming of an unexpected coordination polymer {[NO2BzMePy][CuCl3]}_∞(l), in which the [CuCl3]~- anions form a one-dimensional chlorine-bridged Cu(II) chain with the Cu···Cu distance of 3.236 A, while the [NO2BzMePy]~+ cations stack into a column through C- H···π and π···π interactions. The crystal structure is stabilized by an extensive network of C- H···Cl hydrogen bonds between the columns and the chains, and 1 exhibits ferromagnetic coupling behavior with J— 22.11 cm~(-1).
