摘要

I grew up in Huntington, Pennsylvania where my father was President of Juniata College. One of the outstanding students of the College was David Hercules. I am sure I first heard mention of David at home, but I remember as well his going to MIT. While he was at MIT, I was in secondary school in Massachusetts, and I remember spending a weekend with David and enjoying a visit to his lab. This I think was an important part of preparing me for thinking about chemistry as an area of study because when I went to Haverford College I became a chemistry major. However, David's influence was more than that. I followed David to MIT, I am sure because of conversations about his work there, and my research work built upon some of what he has undertaken at MIT in fluorescence and excited state chemistry.
