The world's growing population is largely fueled by explosive growth within the Asian region, with India and China leading the way forward as some of the world's most populous nations. One of the most common staple foods that is strongly featured in Asian cuisine is rice. Rice is a cereal crop and is actually a type of grass. It belongs to the same family as wheat and corn. Two species of rice that are mainly featured as an agricultural crop are Oryza sativa, grown worldwide; and Oryza glaberritna, grown in West Africa. Rice plays a dominant role in Asian diet as a main food source, and is also used in appetizers, desserts, and even drinks (such as rice wine and rice vinegar). Research estimates that up to 3 billion people consume rice on a daily basis.
