More than 320 people attended the Annual Dinner at the Guildhall on 11 May. The guest speaker was Sir Kenneth Bloomfield.an his own, words 'the former Sir Humphrey of Northern Ireland' as former Head of Northern Ireland Civil Service and Second permanent Under Secretary at the Northern Ireland Office. In an address, spiced with amusing and entertaining anecdotes, he had a serious message. He made a strong plea for greater recognition of the role and standing of the engineer in our society. Drawing on his own experience in the Environment Department in Northern Ireland he said he had as a result begun to appreciate just how many specialism there were in 'the broad rubric of engineering'.
