As McCall (2010) proposes, experienceis crucial in developing high-potentialemployees into effective executives. Signif-icant challenges arise, however, when thecircumstances requiring leadership prepa-ration are both rare and extraordinar-ily costly or dangerous to reproduce.Such is the case for organizationalcrises. Predicting the magnitude and scopeof organizational crises is extraordinar-ily difficult, as is offering leaders thefirst-hand, experiential training necessaryto manage the unexpected effectively.Instead, preparing talent to lead duringcrises requires systematic, nonexperientialleadership-development efforts.
