A PROMISING METHOD FOR BIOFUEL PRODUCTION

The pretreatment process basically involves using dilute acids,explosive decompression (steam), ammonia fiber explosion, or treatment withorganic solvents. The byproducts produced during the pretreatmentprocess of glucose and xylose degradation such as hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF) and furfural produce levulinic and formic acids that stall the processof fermentation of sugars to ethanol and also reduce the yield. To addressthis challenge, researchers from the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) led bythe CEO, Jay Keasling, are working toward developing a cost-effective, clean,secure, and energy-efficient method to produce fuels from biomass.
