摘要

The major portion of biodiesel available on the markettoday is known as first-generation biodiesel, made fromrenewable oils and fats, particularly vegetable oil. The mostcommon production route to produce biodiesel istransesterification, where vegetable oil is reacted withmethanol in the presence of alkaline catalysts to producebiodiesel and glycerine (a byproduct). However,conventional transesterification generally yields severalundesirable byproducts. To reduce the amount of byproductsproduced, most biodiesel manufacturers prefer to usefeedstocks with high triglyceride/low-fatty acid content,which limits the amount of suitable feedstock available.
