In this regard, Bello Yakubu and his research group atWuhan University, China, have identified a new process ofbioremediation that helps in reducing the amount ofhydrocarbon present in the soil that is polluted by thepresence of crude oil remains. The bioremediation processis carried out by using 12 different kinds of bacterial species.The researchers were interested in identifying the suitablebacterial strain that has maximum potential in reducing thehydrocarbon content present in the soil. These bacterialstrains require additional nutritional supply in order topromote their growth. Yakubu said, "In conventionalbioremediation processes, the nutrients required by thebacterial strains are supplied in the form of fertilizerscontaining phosphorous, nitrogen, and various otheradditional supplements. But in turn these fertilizers are foundto be hardening the soil and reduce the fertility of the soil. Inorder to overcome this challenge we are adding animalmanure as a source of nutrition supply to the bacteria usedin cleaning up the petroleum-polluted land."
