Morphine is one of the world's best painkillers. It was first isolated and derived from opium (found in poppy plants) more than two centuries ago. Early in 2010, a team of researchers from the University of Calgary (Canada) had discovered two unique genes in the poppy plant. These genes were responsible for the synthesis of morphine and codeine from poppy plants. As part of their continued research on the plant and its metabolic pathways, the researchers, headed by Peter Facchini, PhD, Professor, have further investigated the role of the enzymes that the genes code for.
