To lower the dependence on conventional fossil fuels, and thus reduce the concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO_2) in the environment, it is essential to find alternative sources of fuel. However, finding fuels from biological sources that are economically viable is difficult and challenging. Algae have the potential to present solutions for fiature energy problems. Research in algae for fuel production is exciting because of many reasons, such as, algae can be a major source of biofuels; it is already being used in many new industries and applications; it has the capability to provide an environmentally friendly solution; and it can be used for cost-effective CO_2 sequestration and wastewater treatment because of its bioremediation potential.
