Escherichia coli Emphysematous Endogenous Endophthalmitis in a Child With Hemoglobin SS Disease

We report a 5-year-old male with hemoglobin SS sickle cell disease who developed endogenous emphysematous endophthalmitis caused by Escherichia coli. We included a brief review of the English literature for cases of endogenous endophthalmitis in patients with sickle cell hemoglobinopathy. Our report highlights that although most reported cases of endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis in patients with hemoglobinopathy are caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis caused by E. coli must be considered in any patient with sickle cell hemoglobinopathy, and E. coli antibiotic coverage should be provided until results from the eye culture and blood cultures are available.
