A Measles Cluster in MichiganChallenges for Measles Diagnosis in Adults Case Series and Review

Fewer than 200 cases of measles are reported each year in the United States, and healthcare workers in this country have little experience recognizing measles. While historically a childhood disease, adults are also at risk for measles and, as possible in any child or adult previously immunized for measles, may present with modified measles, making diagnosis more difficult. We present 3 cases of adult measles reported to the Michigan Department of Community Health as part of a multistate outbreak associated with an international traveler. These cases illustrate the need for increased awareness of adult measles, challenges for the clinician in diagnosis, and the need for rapid public health intervention in all suspect cases of measles.
