THE NEXT STEP: EXTENDED GROUP PROJECTS FOR INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS CLASSES*

This article, describing what may be calledthe next stepin making the most effective use of real-life problems in collaborative learning exercises for the classroom, proceeds from two premises: Real-life problems should be used to introduce concepts, and students need to experience mathematics as a process. In addition, it illustrates, with a few ideas, a series of group projects that develop the concept of a function, and in particular that of a linear function.*Partially supported by a Judge Julian Beck Instructional Development Grant.
