Introduction:The histaminergic system influences central cardiovascular regulation in normo- and hypotension, and the activation of central histamine H_1 receptors has previously been shown to reverse critical haemorrhagic hypotension in rats [1]. Similarly serotonin, acting via 5-HT_(1A) receptors in the hindbrain, induces a pressor effect in haemorrhage-shocked rats [2]. Recent studies in our laboratory have demonstrated interactions between the histaminergic and other neuronal systems, including the serotonergic system, in central cardiovascular regulation [3]. Since chlorpheniramine, a H_1 receptor antagonist, inhibits the central serotonin-induced pressor effect in normotensive rats [4], the aim of this study was to examine an involvement of 5-HT_(1A) receptors in histamine-mediated resuscitation.
