Histamine, acting centrally as a neurotransmitter, influences the central cardiovascular regulation. Exogenous histamine administered intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) evokes a pressor effect in normotensive rats [1]. A similar effect is seen after inhibition of histamine N-methyltransferase. The action is due to activation of the sympathetic system and secretion of arginine vasopressin (AVP) [1]. Previous papers have clearly demonstrated interactions between the histaminergic and opioidergic [2], muscarinic cholinergic [3] and noradrenergic systems [4] in the central cardiovascular regulation. Since angiotensinergic neurones are able to influence cardiovascular centre function [5], the present studies were undertaken to determine possible interactions between histaminergic and angiotensinergic systems in the regulation of the rat circulation.
