Infections caused by streptococcal organisms have been recognized since the late 1800s. In 1933, Lancefield defined a serologic scheme classification that increased our understanding of beta hemolytic streptococci. For many years, group A Strep (GAS) was considered to be the primary pathogen, but it eventually became apparent that other strains including groups B, C, D, F, and G were also capable of causing invasive disease.
