In order to obtain direct evidence for the involvement of IgE in the eosinophil-mediated cytotoxicity, dinitrophenylated (DNP) schistosomula of Schistosoma japonicum coated with monoclonal IgE antibodies were examined as to whether they were killed by rat peritoneal eosinophils. The results indicated that the cytotoxicity of the eosinophils was dependent on a mouse monoclonal anti-DNP IgE antibody, but not on another monoclonal antibody specific to ovalbumin. Moreover, an enhanced cytotoxicity was observed when eosinophils were obtained from rats 4 weeks after infection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis.
