HIV-Associated Nephropathy With Peripheral Edema, Arterial Hypertension, and Hyperlipidemia Case Report and Literature Review

Infection with the HIV may lead to a wide spectrum of anatomic and functional derangements in multiple target organs, such as the kidney. Renal diseases occurring in the course of HIV infection can be classified into the following 5 groups: coincidental renal disorders, acute renal failure syndromes, HIV-associated glomerulopathies, unrelated intrinsic renal disorders in persons with prior HIV infection, and HIV infection developing in patients receiving renal replacement therapy.Particularly, HIV-related glomerulopathies include HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) and a variety of primitive, immune complex-mediated, glomerular lesions (Table 1) besides glomerular nephropathies secondary to systemic diseases (including diabetes mellitus, amyloidosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or multiple myeloma).
