This review examines the role that the bis-trimethylsilylamido group, N{SiMe3}(2)(-), has had on the development of the chemistry of the metallic elements of the p-block. Key historic milestones are summarized, with the focus of the report on the structural aspects that this ligand plays on compounds reported in the last 15 years.
