The increasing importance of PCD/diamond/CVDD and PCBN/cBN tooling in the automotive industry

To improve the performance and reliability of automotive components, it is necessary to machine new and advanced materials to both close and consistent dimensional tolerances - every time. To be competitive, productivity has to be high and reject or scrap levels to be very low or zero. PCD and PCBN defined edge cutting tools and diamond and cBN grinding wheels are very well established machining products that are increasingly meeting the demands imposed by the automotive industry. As individual products or processes, they enable economic machining at higher speeds/metal removal rates, producing improved surface finish and dimensional tolerances. Increasingly, these materials are being used in combination to improve manufacturing efficiency even further. Hence the synergistic application of diamond and PCBN/cBN will become more commonplace and therefore a greater understanding of the range and interaction of these materials is important. In this paper by M.W. Bailey, H.O. Juchem, M.W. Cook, J.L. Collins and P. Butler-Smith, examples are given in which a range of diamond and PCBN/cBN products are used in combination to provide solutions of engineering and manufacturing excellence. A number of newer materials are also discussed which extend the possibilities, and subsequent process improvements, of the combined application of diamond and PCBN/cBN still further.
