Materials wear issues cost UK industry some ￡650 million a year according to a study by the Government's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). To address this the department is putting in place a program on research into Life Performance of Materials' (LPM) - which will focus on industrial problems relating to life prediction and modelling, failure prediction, degradation monitoring and in-service performance.
