Auxiliary contacts for contactors play a big role in determining the reliability sf control systems: in safety related applications, using the right type of auxiliasy is essential. Nevertheless, says Steve Rickard of Moeller Electric, most designers pay far too little attention to the characteristics and performance of auxiliaries. Perhaps it's because their name - auxiliary contacts - makes them sound unimportant, or perhaps it's because designers are not really aware that different types with very different characteristics are available. But, whatever the reason, it's surely true that compared with most other components used in control systems, auxiliary contacts receive very little thought.
