Tennessee case study in full-scale development and integration of switchgrass feedstocks with biorefinery operations: Genera Energy and UT Biofuels Initiative

The logistics of handling feedstocks for large-scale commercialbiorefming has increasingly been recognized as critical for theindustry to move forward and mature. Feedstock production,management, economics, and logistics all play key roles in thescale-up of this entire industry. This Commentary looks at the effortsof Genera Energy and the University of Tennessee's (UT's) BiofuelsInitiative in a State of Tennessee-funded, large-scale pre-commercialswitchgrass-to-ethanol program that was established as a way to gainperspective and experience on the production and logistics of biomassfeedstocks and their conversion to advanced biofuels.
