Industrial biotechnology in the UK: A funder's perspective

The European Union (EU) is a union of twenty-seven member states with an agreed budget of ?864.3 billion for the period 2007-2013; the UK's budget contribution is estimated at approximately ?100 billion. The Framework Program has been running since 1984; it is the EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe and plays a lead role in multidisciplinary research and cooperative activities. The Seventh Framework Program (FP7) continues that approach and has a budget of ?53.2 billion, the largest funding allocation yet. FP7 has several research priorities, of which the Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology (FAFB) theme has the most relevance to industrial biotechnology.
