ETP shaft couplings employ a special high friction coating to increase friction in tapered sleeve connections Plain shafts without keyways are frequently used in drive trains with high requirements on fatigue strength. They are also used in situations where assembly through sealing arrangements is simplified with a plain shaft. Very large industrial shafts for general usage are mostly made without keys in order to avoid the strength reduction that a keyway produces. Further, there is a trend towards more frequent general usage of plain shafts in modern machine building: most servomotors today are produced with plain shafts to avoid any risk of looseness.
