The Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) on 'Physics and Technology at the Nanometer Scale' was held in San Jose and Punta Leona, Costa Rica, from June 25 to July 3, 2001. This was the first PASI event to focus on nanoscience, bringing together world-class scientists from the hemisphere. THis short school was supported jointly by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, and brought together 33 lecturers and 80 other participants from 11 countries, including researchers from both well-established and emerging groups in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, the US and Canada, as well as Cuba, Chile, Costa Rica, and Colombia.
