Machines are becoming increasingly capable, which makes it more important than ever to provide convenient, intuitive user interfaces. But cost is a critical consideration, Emmanuel de Richecour of Molex looks at how customised membrane keypads can help to address this conundrum. In an attempt to keep costs down, it's tempting for designers of products in every sector to scrimp on the user interface. The result is all too familiar - a couple of multi-function pushbuttons and a menu system so convoluted that it would have given Einstein nightmares. This is unfortunate, as the user interface is the key to unlocking the features and hopefully benefits that the designer has built into the product. Without a friendly interface, the majority of users will probably never be aware of those benefits and if they don't know they are there, why would they pay for them.
