Phil Burge, marketing manager at SKF, looks at how the latest generation of predictive maintenance technology is enabling the manufacturers and end users of off-road and construction vehicles to minimise maintenance costs and downtime. The manufacturers and end users of off-road and construction vehicles are constantly looking for ways to minimise operating and maintenance costs while maximising vehicle efficiency and life in service. Effective maintenance strategies are essential if this is to be achieved, as maintenance and repairs often represent a significant proportion of lifetime operating costs. To enable this expenditure to be reduced, leading manufacturers such as SKF, have developed a new generation of condition monitoring technology, which is allowing vehicle builders and users to take a predictive approach to maintenance as opposed to time-based strategies, effectively reducing machine failures and optimising uptime.
