摘要

The smart antenna technique, which will be equipped for portable mobile communication terminals will realize adaptively controlled pattern, will play an important role in the next generation radio communication systems. It is well known that the synthetic pattern is strongly affected by the mutual coupling between antenna elements when the array spacing is small. Methods for compensation of mutual coupling between array elements of single-mode antennas such as a dipole array antenna and monopole array antenna have already been established. However, multielement monopole or dipole arrays can not be used for portable terminals because the available space is limited, and built-in multiple-mode antennas such as the inverted F-shaped antennas have been used with a monopole antenna. In this report, a method to compensate the mutual coupling between array elements composed of multi-mode antenna and single-mode antenna is proposed by introducing a concept of an equivalent array spacing between array elements.
