Photonic crystal fibers have certain critical features due to their own particular structures, in which air holes are periodically arranged in the cladding region. The small bending loss characteristics of PCFs are particularly attractive. As a practical example for the forthcoming FTTx era, we will need optical fiber wiring for residential and business premises that is smaller in diameter, with a small loss increase and sufficient reliability. In this paper, we discuss the application of hole-assisted type PCFs to optical fiber wiring for residential and business premises. The optical characteristics such as field pattern, bending loss, splice loss and mechanical reliability are investigated both theoretically and experimentally.
