Separating nitrogen from oxygen using a membrane, a holy grail in membrane science, could now he achievable thanks to a method for 'fine tuning' the size of nanoscopic filter pores developed by a research group in Albuquerque, USA.Lead researcher Jeff Brinker, who is senior scientist at the US Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories and a professor at the University of New Mexico, reports that nanopore size can be adjusted very precisely using a simple beam of ultraviolet light. Sandia and UNM have filed a joint patent application on the method.
