When Quarry Lakes Regional Park opened in 2001 we recognized we had a challenging but unique opportunity. The park site was once a gravel quarry, but had been abandoned some 30 years earlier. So before being able to open this area to the public, in 1995 the order of the day was cleaning it up and making it safe to use as a park. In simple terms, this required scraping the ground bare, reshaping the land in some places and removing most of the industrial debris. At the end of that transformation process we had 300 acres of water and 150 acres of almost bare ground from which to create our park.
