The effects of random photon fogging and selected modes of display of dental radiographs containing known pathology were determined from an analysis of diagnostic errors resulting when both dentists and non-dentists interpreted appropriate displays in balanced experiments. The data suggest that diagnostic experience is task specific and that noise having effects which may be influenced by video manipulation limits diagnostic performance under the experimental conditions. The effects of radiographic experience, while significant, were not sufficient to eclipse improved performance obtainable from at least one interpreter using unorthodox video display.
