Aiming for Patient Safety in the Networked Healthcare Environment

In his recent book about the need for a clean energy revolution, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas Friedman had this to say about standards: "And it is that interaction between government regulators and corporate managers and engineers-that dull, gray, boring interaction about standards-that is essential on a grand scale if we are going to spur the innovation we need ..." Friedman was talking about energy standards, but his statement could apply just as well to healthcare, where innovation is needed to create a system that will achieve the promise of IT efficiency while maintaining and enhancing patient safety.
