Lake Grassmere's Railway

The heaps of white salt and coloured ponds that can be seen from passing trains or from the road at Lake Grassmere in Marlborough are signs of a unique New Zealand industry. Between 1952 and 1963 a light railway operated at the lake to collect the harvested salt at Dominion Salt Ltd's operation. Graeme Carter describes the operation.
