Go-ahead for NSW mineral processing park

The New South Wales government has approved the dedication of 100ha of state-owned land for the development of the Lithgow Minerals Processing Park. The site at Wallerawang, 7km west of Lithgow, was selected for further study and evaluation from four locations identified from preliminary studies carried out in 1994. Lithgow beat the other contenders (one other near to Lithgow and two in the Hunter Valley close to the Liddell and Bayswater Power stations) because of a clear industry preference for the Wallerawang site. This was due to its proximity to a range of mineral resources and existing infrastructure. Within 250km of the park there are sources of magnesite (Thuddungra, near Young), rutile, zircon and monazite (near Newcastle and other inland deposits), kaolin (Mudgee area), quartz gravel (Cowra) as well as other metallic minerals such as copper and zinc.
