Minsal, a subsidiary of Chilean fertiliser producer, Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA (Soquimich), will open its lithium carbonate processing facility at the Salar de Atacama in northern Chile in October 1996. After debugging and sample testing the company should be supplying lithium carbonate to customers by January. On average, the company will be offering its Li_2CO_3 for 90c./lb, which has caused some concern at two major world producers, FMC Corp. and Cyprus Amax. Both companies have enjoyed comfortable control over the market, and fear that this average price of 90c./lb could disrupt their positions. Minsal claims that its two rivals would have a right to be worried because prices are, on average, 60c. higher than what Minsal will offer. "We are looking to fundamentally change the lithium carbonate market," says a company spokesman. "The less expensive we sell it, the more demand we will see for it."
