Vertical shaft kilns offer greater thermal efficiency than rotary kilns. Increasing fuel costs, the reduction of greenhouse gases and taxes on CO_2 emissions will mean vertical kilns will make up a greater portion of new kiln installations in the future. This article examines the different types of kiln technology and discusses how the parallel flow regenerative (PFR) kiln will become a valuable alternative to other types of kiln.
