Unusual Uptake of In-111 Labeled Platelets in a Patient with Polycythemia

ln-111 labeled platelets have been used in the evaluation of a number of pathologic processes, including transplant rejection and vascular thrombosis. However, ln-111 labeled platelet studies may also be helpful in the diagnosis and management of thrombocytopenia. A case is presented in which a platelet imaging and survival study prevented an unwarranted splenectomy and provided insights into the etiology of the patient's thrombocytopenia.
