Refractory streamlining in Europe

From a market maturity viewpoint, western Europe is one of the three 'old men' - that is mature markets - of the global refractories business: the others being North America and Japan. At present, economic conditions in Europe are good, but the domestic refractors' sector still has a number of concerns to deal with. China's refractors' production is increasing in strength and, consequently, competition. The cost of energy and raw materials remains high. In addition, the steel industry is experiencing a heightened period of consolidation: notable recent developments are Indian steelmaker Mittal Steel's purchase of the Anglo-Dutch Arcelor, and Tata's bid to buy Corus.
