Patients often seek advice from surgeons concerning air travel with a cast. As surgeons may be concerned about giving inaccurate advice, they often advise patients to contact their airline carrier. Table 1 provides the policies of eight airline carriers with respect to patients flying with splints or casts. Unfortunately, there appears to be no consistency in the advice received from the carriers. Although the guidelines are the same for upper and lower limb injuries requiring immobilisation, most information is directed at lower limb injuries; particularly fractures, and there is no specific reference to upper limb injuries. The headings of Table 1 indicate the main concerns.
