Contrary to assertions by Mozambican officials, diversified resources company BHP Billiton (BHP) says it cannot put a time span on when it will kick-start its Corridor Sands project in Mozambique's Gaza Province, which is estimated to contain 100m. tonnes of ilmenite and is considered to be a > 100 year asset. Corridor Sands, a company that is 100 percent owned by Australia's BHP Billiton, which won the mining concession, plans to mine ilmenite, a base mineral used for titanium production. The Chibuto heavy minerals processing unit, estimated to cost 500m. dollars and capable of producing 800,000 tpa of ilmenite, will go into production before the end of the year, the Chibuto manager, Zacarias Couto said.
