Attapulgite face-off

Leading Spanish absorbent clay producers go head-to-head with Senegalese resources and European packaging sites. SPAIN'S SEPIOL SA (Sepiolsa) has upped the ante in the European attapulgite industry by acquiring a majority stake in Senegalese producer Senegal Mines, plus French packaging facility C. Maquine SA. These strategic additions mirror the assets of Sepiolsa's biggest competitor in the Spanish absorbents industry, Tolsa SA, which already owns Senegal attapulgite producer Societe Senegalaise de Phosphates de Thies SA (SSPT). Tolsa also acquired the Netherlands-based packaging outfit Mostert Absorbents BV in December 2002.
