Industrial minerals are frequently used in applications where the end product finds its way into our stomachs. Perlite is used in the cultivation of soft fruits and vegetables; diatomite as an abrasive in toothpaste and a filter aid in brewing; borates, nitrogen and phosphates in fertilisers; and salt as a universal flavouring and cooking aid. Clays too, are vital in the refining of edible oils and beverages, and although many of us are striving to reduce the fat in our diets, there are parts of the world where many edible oils still hit the shelves in an largely unrefined form. It is to these markets that bleaching clay suppliers are looking for future development of their business.
