performance of rhizomania resistant sugar beet varieties in UK trials

Rhizomania resistant sugar beet varieties were tested in field trials under infected and non-infected conditions over the period 2002 to 2004. The performance of new resistant varieties showed an improvement in both yield and juice quality in comparison to earlier introductions. Low levels of bolting from early sowings were recorded with some of the resistant varieties. In general, rhizomania resistant varieties were susceptible to foliar diseases although there was reasonable resistance in some. Intrials under infected conditions all resistant varieties showed acceptable yields, with no visual symptoms.
