Resources and Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of the privately held Hurley Group, is based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The group currently operates dimension stone and industrial mineral operations, producing slate, granite, silica and pyrophyllite. From its open pit pyrophyllite mine - situated at Manuels, approximately 15km west-south-west of St John's, Newfoundland - the company mines, dry grinds, and air classifies a variety of pyrophyllite products, which are marketed under the trade name ALTIFIL. Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrous aluminium silicate, with the molecular formula AI_2Si_4O_(10)(OH)_2. ALTIFIL is chemically similar to clay, however, it also has the appearance and physical characteristics of talc. This product can be used in a number of applications, notably filler and extender applications. Uses include foundry washes; ceramics and ceramic glazes; selenium manufacturing; low cement concrete; white cement; and high temperature sealants. ALTIFIL can also be used as a carrier for agricultural chemicals; and filler products in paints, industrial coatings, rubber, and caulks. Product development is ongoing in many of these applications, but research in the paint fillers market has been especially successful to date.
