In a recent New York Times opinion piece (NYT 5/26/2015) it was noted that the U.S. (compliments of you and me) has spent $488,000,000 in Afghanistan, specifically aimed at developing its mining industry. Much of this funding was based on assessments made by American geologists and the Pentagon in 2010 that suggested untapped Afghan mineral wealth could be worth up to one trillion dollars. Unfortunately, no infrastructure or systematic plan existed to extract and market those resources, nor did throwing money at those shortcomings appear to have any positive effect.
