Refractory fundamentals

The term refractory, comes from the Latin word refractarius, meaning stubborn. This is probably the last word with which one would describe the refractories industry, since any resistance to change in market demand would be commercial suicide on the part of refractory suppliers. The only stubborn aspect of the refractories industry is the refractory materials and products themselves. That is, their resistance to extreme conditions of heat and corrosion during the containment of hot and molten substances and gases. In essence, refractories act as heat insulating materials.
