Using recycled glass (cullet) has several advantages, namely, less waste, easier melting, less quarrying and reduced furnace emissions. Not surprisingly, recycling has been around a long time and has increased rapidly in the last few years. FEVE (the European Glass Container Federation) has published annual recycling figures for Europe since 1980.In those 20 years, the amount of glass recycled has increased almost five fold, and recycled glass as a percentage of production has increased from 15 percent in 1980 to 47 percent in 2000. Container production and recycling will be reviewed in the five major glass producing countries.
