In the days and even weeks following India's Republic Day on 26 January the devastation left in the wake of the immense earthquake that hit the western state of Gujarat that morning continued to make headlines. Pictures showed whole towns reduced to rubble, and estimates of the number of fatalities soared to 100,000.Tragically, the government's official death toll, as IM went to press, stood at 19,296, with many thousands more still missing, a further 166,836 injured and a total of almost 16m. people officially 'affected' by the disaster. In neighbouring Pakistan, 18 people were reported killed with around 100 injured.
